Upgrade paths for charities moving to Windows 10

tt-product update

As of 12th January 2016, Microsoft ended their support for Windows 8 (not Windows 8.1).

There aren’t a huge number of people using version 8 of the operating system anyhow because it was followed up by a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 quite soon after Windows 8 came out.

Still, it’s really important to use a supported version of Windows to make sure you’re receiving essential software and security updates, which protect your systems and your data from viruses, spyware, and other threats.

Windows 8.1 support has been extended through to 2023 by Microsoft, so for most charities using Windows 8, upgrading for free to Windows 8.1 is an easy solution. Or, if you’d like to, you can upgrade all the way to Windows 10 for free (if your systems support it).

How to upgrade

If you requested a Windows 8 upgrade through tt-exchange, you should have access to Windows 8.1 in the Microsoft VLSC through Software Assurance and can simply download the upgrade there.

If you didn’t get Windows 8 through tt-exchange, you can follow Microsoft’s instructions for upgrading to Windows 8.1.

If you want to upgrade to Windows 10…

Windows 10 Professional is actually available as a free download until 29th July 2016. If you have active Software Assurance, it’s important to upgrade through the VLSC rather than through Microsoft’s other free upgrade routes though, as otherwise you’d lose your Software Assurance along with benefits like access to Microsoft’s e-learning courses. Also, even if you’re not currently using the Enterprise edition, you’d keep your license rights to that edition if you want to upgrade from Pro to Enterprise later on.

If you need Windows 10 Enterprise…

Then you should request a licence through our tt-exchange donation programme.

¡ If you don’t have an operating system that’s eligible for an upgrade license, you might be eligible to request a Windows Pro full operating system – Get Genuine license first to obtain Windows 10 Pro. Then, you can request an upgrade license through tt-exchange to get the Enterprise edition !

Windows 10 is now available worldwide and it’s highly recommended that anyone using an older version of Windows should upgrade sooner rather than later.
